Studying abroad? Storage solutions for students going overseas

September 16, 2017

For some college students, it’s that time of the year to drag their feet back to classes and sit through lectures and labs. However, for a growing number of students, it’s time to pack their bags and hop on a plane to a foreign country to study abroad.

While taking courses at universities across the globe offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, it also raises quite the logistical headache for these students: What to do with all their stuff while they’re gone. It’s often much too expensive to continue paying rent on an apartment when overseas, so students participating in a study abroad program need a smart alternative.

With low rates and a variety of units to choose from, self storage makes the ideal solution to this problem.

The rising number of students studying abroad

During 2014-2015, more than 313,000 U.S. students went abroad to receive international credits, according to data from the 2016 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange published by the Institute of International Education in partnership with the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. This represents an uptick of nearly 3 percent, with almost a quarter of these students majoring in science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) fields.

“We need to empower more of America’s future leaders to experience the world beyond our borders,” explained Evan Ryan, Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State. “International education helps people develop the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in today’s global economy, and creates networks across borders that improve international understanding and strengthen the national security of the United States.”

Studying abroad is great for resumes, as 97 percent of these students found employment within a year of graduation, according to the University of California, Merced.

Storing belongings when studying abroad

As mentioned above, it can be prohibitively expensive to pay for rent at an apartment while studying abroad. This creates a major problem for students leaving the country for an extended period of time, as they’ll have to find a place to keep all their belongings while they’re out of town.

Consider all of the different items that will need to be stored during the several months or year of a study abroad program:

College essentials

Although textbooks are a necessity for earning good grades in school, they might not be particularly useful when students are taking classes overseas. However, these big, expensive tomes will no doubt be needed upon return to refresh or review for future classes. It’s simply untenable to lug around all these books when traveling to a foreign country – plus the baggage fees alone would instantly drain any college student’s budget.

Similarly, PCs and intramural sports equipment most likely won’t be making any international trips anytime soon either. All of these essential – and expensive – college items need to be stored somewhere safe while students are traveling the world and making new experiences.

Furniture

Storing furniture can be more of a problem for upperclassmen who have their own apartments than those living in the dorms, but it’s nonetheless a challenge for any college student. While it might be easy to store a bag of clothing at a friend’s place for a short time, beds, dressers, tables, couches and the like are much too big and cumbersome to have someone hold for six months or a year.

“Finding a safe, long-term solution for a car is always a problem for college students.”

Automobile

As anyone who has had to fight to find parking on campus or spent a month’s rent on a semester-long parking pass can attest to, finding a safe, long-term solution for a car is always a problem for college students. This, coupled with being out of the country for an extended period, can lead to a disaster for unprepared drivers who leave to study abroad.

For any of these situations and more, a self storage unit provides the ideal solution to keep these items safely stored, as there are several size options, affordable rental prices and guaranteed personal privacy for all the belongings.
