There’s no denying that moving can be a major pain. It’s really no fun packing up every single thing you own, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t shortcuts to make your move a bit easier. Here are a few tips you’ll want to keep in mind for your next move:
Get a self storage unit
Not only will a unit in a self storage facility allow you to space out your move, you’ll also have a place to keep the belongings you don’t need right away – like your giant dining room table – to free up some space in your new home while you get settled.
Pack an overnight bag first
Once you’ve moved in, the last thing you need is to dig through a dozen different boxes to locate your toothbrush, bed sheets, pajamas and glasses. Pack one box or bag that is strictly for things you’ll need in the first 24 hours of your move.
Use clothes instead of bubble wrap
Save yourself some space and a few bucks, and use your t-shirts and sweatshirts as a way to keep your glassware or plates from chipping while on the move.
Take advantage of plastic wrap
Instead of unpacking your DVD shelves or dresser drawers, leave everything where it is, and just wrap the shelves or drawers up with plastic wrap. It will save space and give you one less thing to unpack when you get to your new home.
If you not only write what room boxes belong in, but also exactly what is contained therein, you’ll be able to find exactly what you need quickly and easily. This also goes for nuts and bolts that come from your furniture. Make sure you put them in a sealed plastic bag, write what they belong to and then tape it to its respective piece of furniture.
Leave clothes on hangers
For the clothes that usually hang in your closet, don’t waste your time taking them off the hangers, packing the clothes and the hangers separately and then hanging them back up when you get to your new home. Instead, grab a handful of clothes, bind them together using masking tape, zip ties or twist ties, and pull a garbage bag over them like the dry cleaners do.
Those helping you move may not know which is the second or third bedroom, so assign each room a color and label the boxes accordingly.
