How a self storage unit can help with your Halloween decorations

It’s that time of year again when pumpkins pop up on our porches and we start stocking up on candy. With Halloween on the horizon, Americans are hitting their favorite stores and getting the scariest decorations they can find to make their homes more festive for the occasion.

However, there may be one thing holding back some shoppers from turning their everyday home into a veritable haunted house: Storing all of these witch’s cauldrons, animatronic Draculas, and inflatable jack-o’-lanterns for the other 11 months of the year.

Fortunately, a self-storage unit can be the ideal storage solution for all of your Halloween decorations.

How much are Americans spending on Halloween?

According to the National Retail Federation, an estimated 179 million Americans plan to partake in Halloween festivities this year, an increase of 9 million people over 2016’s numbers.

These nearly 200 million people are also expected to spend a new high of $9.1 billion celebrating this frightening holiday. This represents a significant surge following 2016’s $8.4 billion in spending, which set its own record at the time.

“Americans plan on dishing out about $2.7 billion on Halloween decorations.”

While the lion’s share of that money ($3.4 billion) will go to costumes and $2.7 billion will be spent on candy, Americans still plan on dishing out about $2.7 billion on decorations. That’s a lot of cotton cobwebs and plastic skeletons.

“Americans are planning to spend more than ever as they gear up for Halloween,” said Matthew Shay, NRF president, and CEO. “Retailers are helping customers celebrate in style with a huge selection of costumes, candy, and decorations to cater to ghosts and goblins of all ages.”

Further, 49 percent of respondents to the NRF survey said they plan to decorate their home or yard, and 35 percent will throw or attend a Halloween party. All of these activities will need seasonally appropriate decorations to make them successful and festive.

Your Halloween decoration storage solution

Storing holiday decorations in your home – no matter the season – can be a cumbersome task. Getting into the crawlspace or attic, searching through the various totes and boxes to locate your light-up ghosts and giant spiders amongst Christmas lights and ornaments takes up precious time you could spend transforming your lawn into a graveyard.

Instead of cluttering your home with tombstones and vinyl bats, consider a self-storage unit for your Halloween decorations. A storage unit makes for the perfect place to keep everything organized in one spot. Also, it helps preserve the longevity of the decorations, ensuring you can use them year after year.

When you start packing away everything come November, remember a few useful tips:

  • Maximize space by placing smaller items inside larger or hollow ones. For instance, big empty plastic pumpkins make a great place to keep smaller festive trinkets and knickknacks.
  • Label all boxes and totes with a complete list of all the contents.
  • Use cushioned packaging material for fragile decorations, like glass, ceramic or lights.
  • Always put the heaviest or most structurally sound bin or box on the bottom of any stack of items.
  • Storing more than just Halloween decorations in the unit? Keep the seasonally appropriate items separate to ensure you’re not wasting time sifting through everything when another holiday rolls around.
  • Use a hook or rack to hang decorations that need to maintain their shape.
